We believe it is important that you feel safe at all times when using public transport (OV), which is why we take various measures to keep public transport as safe as possible. What’s more, we are always looking for ways to improve this.
Safety Helpdesk
If you feel unsafe on public transport, you must report this as soon as possible! This will help us identify which areas we still need to improve, so that together, we can once again make public transport that little bit safer.
Read more here about what the safety helpdesk is, where to report to when feeling unsafe and what happens with your report. Also read here what measures we are taking to ensure safe public transport.
I feel unsafe on public transport, where can I report this?
You can report unsafe situations on public transport in a number of ways!
When travelling by bus, tram or ferry, speak to the driver, conductor or skipper, who will contact the traffic control team immediately. They will then ensure that assistance or emergency services come to resolve the situation.
Use an SOS pole at the metro station. Use this if you feel unsafe and require assistance. When you use an SOS pole, you will make immediate contact with a GVB employee.
You can also contact our customer service department by phone +31(0)900-8011 or WhatsApp +31 (0)6-83 09 91 89. You can also contact the customer service department if you wish to report something in general. For example, if you see damage somewhere which could cause injury to passengers or a lift/escalator that has become jammed. Go to the customer service department web page for the opening hours.
In case of acute (life) danger, we recommend that you call the national emergency number 112.

What happens once I have made my report?
We take all reports of unsafe situations seriously. If you require immediate assistance, we will make sure that assistance or an emergency service is called.
If you are reporting a general unsafe situation, we will handle this internally. We will ensure that the correct measures are taken to prevent these types of situations in the future.
How do you ensure that public transport remains safe?
We ensure public transport remains safe for all passengers in various ways. For example, video cameras are installed in all vehicles, drivers and conductors are trained to call in additional assistance in the event of an accident and frequent checks are carried out to see whether passengers are observing the travel regulations.
Read more below about the measures we take to ensure safety on public transport.
Surveillance while traveling
Our drivers, conductors and ferry staff are familiar with all the safety regulations. Our buses, trams, ferries, metro stops and metro stations are also equipped with surveillance cameras. The camera images at metro stations are monitored live by the central traffic control team. They will intervene straight away if something goes wrong.
When a report is filed, the camera images may be requested and viewed by the police.
Assistance in the event of an emergency
If an accident has occurred, the driver, conductor or ferry employee will contact the traffic control team immediately. The traffic control team shall dispatch GVB employees or emergency services to provide assistance as soon as possible.
Every metro station has an SOS pole on the platform and/or at the entrance gates with which you can contact a GVB employee directly.
Inspection by the Service & Safety department
Our public transport care staff are there to ensure safety on public transport. They are deployed in the event of an accident or an unexpected emergency situation. All public transport care staff are trained as Community Service Officers (CSOs). They make sure passengers have used a valid ticket to check in. The public transport care staff can be identified by their uniforms or unidentifiable in plain clothes. The occasionally collaborate with the police and City of Amsterdam Public Space Surveillance and Enforcement (THOR).
We also deploy public transport care staff when a passenger fails to observe the travel regulations, such as by putting their feet on the seats or littering.
Service staff at metro stations and metro stops
Need assistance with anything? Speak to one of our Transport Service Team staff. These service staff are present at all metro stations and at major and minor events in the city. They can be identified by our GVB logo on their clothing.
