In order to travel on public transport (OV), you need valid proof of transport. Will you be taking OV with an OV-chipkaart (public transport chip card) or debit card (OVpay)? Missed check out
Tips
The rate that applies for a missed check-in or check-out is €4 (full rate). This amount may be different if an age discount, discount product or season ticket applies to your trip during your trip.
You are required to check in and out with all transport providers in the Netherlands if you have a student travel discount (Studentenreisproduct) on your OV-chipkaart (public transport chip card), even during your free travel period.
If you miss your check-out 12 times, your OV-chipkaart will be temporarily blocked. You can get your card unblocked by contacting the transport provider that you last checked in with.
What do I do if I forget to check in?
Did you forget to check in when you boarded? If so, you do not have valid proof of transport. As a result, you must check in as quickly as possible using your OV-chipkaart, debit card, barcode ticket or paper card.
Buses and trams are equipped with card readers where you can do this at any thime. Are you travelling by metro? If so, exit at the next stop to check in on the platform or at a metro gate before you continue your journey.
What do I do if I forget to check out?
If you forget to check out, your course of action depends on your proof of transport. The procedure for a OV-chipkaart is different from the process for a debit card (OVpay).

Between January and June and between July and December, you can request a balance refund of up to three rides per transport provider (three rides every six months)
You can request a balance refund for up 180 days after the public transport trip in question.
Follow the steps below if you forgot to check out with your OV-chipkaart:
Go to uitcheckgemist.nl
Enter your OV-chipkaart information
Choose the ride that you want to modify under Stop or Station. Indicate the stops or stations where you boarded and disembarked. We will calculate what the ride cost. You will receive a refund if you overpaid.

It may take up to 14 days before you can view your missed check-out
Did you know that you can also register for missed check-out Alerts? If you do that, you will receive an email as soon as you can request a balance refund after a missed check-in or check-out

You forgot to check out with your debit card, credit card, contactless mobile payment or smart watch.
Before you continue
You must wait five days after your journey to modify your check-in or check-out
You can make these changes for up to 60 days after your journey
Follow the steps below to request a refund:

Enter your payment reference and amount
You can modify your missed check-in or check-out
Tips
The payment reference and amount for your journey is on your bank statement. The payment reference is 18 characters long and begins with NLOV.
You will receive your refund within 15 days or OVpay will deduct it from the cost of your next journey within those 15 days.
