Public Transport Chip Card
The Netherlands switches to the ‘public transport chip card’
Soon you will be able to use the public transport chip card (OV-chipkaart) to travel in all parts of the Netherlands by train, tram, bus and metro.
The new card will be phased in throughout the Netherlands in a step-by-step process. The public transport chip card was first introduced into the Amsterdam metro system. Since August 2009 then the metro is accessible exclusively for chipcard users. It has also been in use on GVB trams and buses since November 2008. This means that you can travel using the public transport chip card in all GVB vehicles.
The current ‘paper’ public transport tickets are still valid on tram and bus but will be scrapped in due course. The public transport chip card is an electronic travel pass of which there are various kinds: rechargeable chip cards, which can be recharged with money and travel products, and disposable chip cards, with a pre-determined validity (e.g. a set number of days or rides).
The disposable public transport chip card is sold at all Ticket Vending and Add Value machines at metro stations and at GVB Tickets & Info. The card is also be available in GVB trams and buses.
