Validation
Your strip ticket must be validated at the beginning of your journey. This is done by stamping one of the numbered strips. You either do this yourself, in one of the yellow machines on conductorless trams, or ask the driver or conductor in a tram or bus to do it.
Which strip is stamped depends upon the number of zones you will be travelling through. Stamping a strip "cancels" it plus the blank strips behind it. You must always cancel ONE STRIP MORE than the number of zones you are travelling. For example, for a journey in one zone cancel two strips, for a journey in two zones cancel three strips, and so on.
To find out how many zones you will be crossing, consult the route map in all tram and bus shelters. Naturally, you can also ask our drivers, conductors or the staff at sales points for zone details.
The stamp shows where (by zone number, eg. 5700) and when (by date, eg. 11 Zon = Sunday of week 11, and time, eg. 15 1/4 = 3.15pm) your ticket was validated.
Validity period
Once you have validated your ticket, it can be used for a set period within the number of zones for which it has been stamped. During this period you may change tram or bus as often as you like - or break your journey - providing you stay within the zones for which the ticket is valid. How long your ticket is valid after stamping depends upon the number of strips cancelled.

Train travel using strip tickets and GVB season tickets
As well as Dutch Railways (NS) tickets, you can also use the following GVB tickets for second-class rail travel within the Amsterdam transport region.

- Zuid - RAI - Duivendrecht - Diemen-Zuid
- Zuid - Bijlmer ArenA

Please note: GVB tickets are not valid for train travel to and from Amsterdam Schiphol
