How season tickets work
A season ticket is valid for a particular set of travel zones and for a given period - one week, one month or one year. The area it covers is based upon a selected zone plus a "star value". That indicates how many additional zones in each direction from the nominated zone the ticket is valid in. The number of the selected zone and the star value are printed on the ticket.

How to choose your season ticket
When deciding the star value of your season ticket, consider the following.
- The route you wish to take. This must be entirely within the area covered by your season ticket.
- The selected zone. This is what determines the area covered. The zones in which you can travel are counted outwards in every direction from the selected zone, the number depending upon the ticket's star value. See the example below.
In the diagram, the journey from A to B passes through five zones. But these are all adjacent to zone 7406. So for this journey, you would need a two-star season ticket with 7406 as the selected zone (7406 + one zone).
As the example shows, your regular journey need not actually include the selected zone. But you are also entitled travel in it, and in the other adjacent zones, in this case 7407 and 7408. Note that travel in zone 7408 is permitted since it does border zone 7406 at one point (circled in blue).
Monthly and weekly season tickets
Your monthly season ticket may start on any date: it need not be for a calendar month. And a weekly season ticket can start on any day of the week. They are valid only until the date of expiry shown: even if you are only able to buy a new season ticket later in the day after expiry, you cannot use the "old" one that morning!
Annual season tickets
An annual season ticket is the easiest and most cost-effective way to travel. It gives twelve months of travel on GVB services for the price of just ten!
Upon presentation of a valid identity document, it is possible to arrange to pay for your annual season by direct debit. You pay for the first month in cash at the time of purchase, with the remainder of the cost being debited directly from your bank account in monthly instalments (Dutch accounts only). You can also pay for a reduced rate season ticket for your dog or bicycle in the same way (bicycles are permitted in the metro and tram 26 only, not on other trams or buses). If you wish to pay in this way, do not forget to bring an identity document, your bank details and your photocard.
Under certain circumstances, it may be possible to surrender your annual season ticket early and obtain a partial refund. For example, if you move away or are ill for a long period. You must be able to prove that you meet one of the refund criteria. See also the refund section.
Season tickets through your employer
You may also be able to buy a season ticket through your employer, if he has a so-called bulk consumption agreement with GVB. For more information, see bulk consumption.
Train travel using season tickets
A three-star or higher GVB season ticket with zone 5700 (Amsterdam City Centre) as the selected zone can also be used for second-class rail travel on the following routes in Amsterdam.
- Holendrecht - Bijlmer ArenA - Duivendrecht - Amstel - Muiderpoort - Amsterdam Centraal - Sloterdijk - Lelylaan
- Zuid - RAI - Duivendrecht - Diemen-Zuid
- Zuid - Bijlmer ArenA
- Muiderpoort - Diemen.
Please note: other season tickets are not valid on any train, and no GVB tickets are valid for train travel to or from Amsterdam Schiphol Airport.
